Surge in 'Digital Dementia'

You knew it was coming: a study is finally out showing how bad constant exposure to electronic devices can be. The "most-connected country" in the world -- South Korea -- has been the subject of a study on "Digital Dementia". Just as with any other tool available to us we can become dependent on it and less capable of functioning without it.

How to Prevent Shin Splints

When I started attending Mesa Community College I developed shin splints. I parked at one end of the campus and had classes from one end to the other. It really hurt! I had no alternative -- I continued to walk through the pain, and after several days the pains gradually subsided and, luckily, I have had no problems since.

When I was attending Palmer Chiropractic College 32 years ago, we were taught that shin splints were a spasm of the Tibialis Anterior muscle brought on by overexercise. Today the definition has broadened to include overloading all the muscles of the lower extremities, and is called medial tibial stress syndrome (MTSS).

While the following information is targeted to people who run for exercise, the author has suggestions that can also be useful for people who do a lot of walking.

5 Foods to Help Fight Spring Allergies

We're getting an early start on the allergy season this year. Here in Arizona we are told that everyone gets allergies eventually.  Arizona used to be the place you came to get rid of allergies, but everyone came here bringing their allergies and their pollen-producing plants with them.

While I try to understand how miserable allergies can be, I still encourage people to utilize every natural remedy they can to relieve their symptoms. Here are some foods that help the body deal with allergies naturally.

Doctors Discover 'Super Honey' with Amazing Power to Treat Soldiers' Wounds and Kill Superbug Infections

Honey is a natural antibiotic. A study done in Egypt in the 1970's showed that surgical wounds taped together instead of sutured, and treated with honey instead of antibiotics produced faster healing, with less infection and less scar tissue (Honey, Mud and Maggots, and Other Medical Marvels by Root-Bernstein, Robert S. and Michele M.). Some people I have told about this over the years have tried it and been pleased with the results.

When the pollen contains certain other ingredients then it is able to help the body deal with the worst bacterial infections. Another honey with pollen from the trees which produce tea-tree oil, available only from Australia, also is effective against MRSA infections.

To Ration Healthcare: Sick Children In Seattle Denied Specialty Care

When you promise more than you can afford, something has to give. This is just as true in government programs as it is in your family budget. If you increase the number of people expecting to receive health care by 10%, but don't increase the money to pay for it, the only alternative is to do what they do in Canada and Great Britain and ration the services.

Luckily, no one has yet mentioned the next step:  making it illegal for you to spend your own money for your own healthcare, but remember, you heard it here first!

If you still think that Obamacare (I believe he deserves the credit for his creation) is going to provide more healthcare -- read on!

Caffeine-Use Disorder: Widespread Health Problem that Needs More Attention

I imagine that many of you are similar to me while I was attending chiropractic school (and for many years afterward): a caffeine addict. Each morning I would enjoy the 'Breakfast of Champions':  a handful of vitamins, two caffeine tablets, and a Pepsi (it didn't provide any assistance in staying awake). Many days after I was in practice would find me partaking of two to three cans of caffeinated soda. A variety of our favorite drinks have caffeine as a component, and it is easy to maintain a daily fix of this drug, but as with all addictive chemicals, we are healthier without it. I finally realized that I had become so accustomed to caffeine in my body that I had no more trouble going to sleep after consuming it than not. Luckily for me, my withdrawal symptoms were limited to moderate headaches for four to five weeks, and I now consider myself caffeine-free -- I probably drink caffeinated sodas no more than two or three times a month.
